Melaka, Malaysia

Malacca is the capital city of Melaka state in Malaysia, located 150km south of Kuala Lumpur. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city was controlled by three different European powers - Portuguese, Dutch and British - over several centuries, resulting in a rich colonial history expressed by its many architectural landmarks, monuments and cultures today. Visitors can discover the remnants of Malacca's historical era with a walk through heritage streets, museums, buildings and ruins scattered throughout old Melaka town. Of note is two special ethnic groups unique to this state - The Baba Nyonya, or Peranakan Chinese, are people descended from the first Chinese migrants in the 14th Century, intermarried with Malays over time and adopting some of their customs. The second is the Kristang people, descended from the original Portuguese colonists that, over time, intermarried with locals.
